EBase USA - Blue Ridge

The first EBase in the USA will be at Apple Ridge Farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia!

The inspiration......

Robert Swan, OBE, is a polar explorer, environmental leader and the first person ever to have walked to the North and South poles.  In 2008, Swan’s 5-year dream of building the world’s first educational base (E-Base) in Antarctica became a reality.  The E-Base is a sustainable green building constructed from post-consumer recycled and renewable materials.  The E-Base is powered completely with wind and solar energy.   "Here at our E-Base we are using green, innovative and sustainable materials and applying them to the cleanest, coldest place on earth.  The E-Base will serve as a model globally and locally," says Robert Swan.

The dream.....

AkzoNobel's - Roanoke, VA site to partner with Apple Ridge Farm to build the USA's first EBase in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia.  The Roanoke chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) has generously donated a railroad boxcar for this project.  This project  entails retrofitting the inside of the box car to a classroom.  Inside, the EBase USA - Blue Ridge  will have multiple computers connected to the internet, a satellite television, small-scale solar and wind classroom educational tools.  This heated and cooled stand-alone “building” (EBase USA - Blue Ridge) will be run entirely on wind and solar power and be set up to educate on how wind and solar power works.
